Day 11-Last Day of Teaching

Last Day of Teaching

“You will never be completely at home again, because part of your heart will always be elsewhere. That is the price you pay for the richness of loving and knowing people in more than one place.” -Miriam Adeney

Being in Belize for a bit now, we’ve noticed that the workplace culture here is vastly different from that in America. Workers in Belize seem to work almost every day and longer hours. Places of work here seem to be occupied and run by a family, instead of randomly selected employees, which makes the workplace atmosphere seem more personal, friendly, and inviting. Over the course of trip, we have noticed that a lot of the employees actually live where they work, which cuts down on their commute, and likely their costs as well. Employment here also seems less strict and formal than America, but the duties and responsibilities are still accomplished.
We’ve really enjoyed the different pace of living here in Belize. No one seems to be rushing around, or concerned about making it somewhere at an exact minute. For example, school rarely starts or ends at what Americans would consider “on-time.” Some habits in Belizean culture that we would love to take back to the U.S. are things like living in the moment and not planning every minute of the day in advance. We’ve also noticed how much time the locals seem to spend sitting outside after the work day and just enjoying fresh air and being outdoors. This seems like a great way to de-stress and is another habit that we would like to take back with us.
