Day 10- Teaching day 5

"Certainly, travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent in the ideas of living." -Mary Ritter Beard

Teaching in Belize has made me realize that we rely so much on technology. I see how lucky we are to have class set textbooks/reading materials, even if they may not be the newest. At San Pablo, the entire class watches educational videos on a single laptop, where in America we have projectors in virtually every room. In America, we rely heavily on the internet to research topics we are teaching, but some teachers in Belize may not have the resources, so they rely the texts that are available. At home, schools have large sets of computers or tablets available to the students for individualized learning; if we need to work 1:1 with a student, the others can focus on technology led lessons. The teachers work extremely hard to make sure every student is meeting their benchmarks, while practicing equity. Theses amazing educators at San Pablo and Red Bank do such valuable work without the convenience that technology brings.

My experience abroad has taught me to think about students’ home life and how they can relate to the content that I’m teaching. Before this trip, I did not understand the depth of what it meant to be culturally responsive, but being immersed into a new culture has been a life changing experience that I will always remember.
