Day 8

"Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all
peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends."   -Maya Angelou

Although we had been preparing for the trip for several months by learning about the culture, climate, and school systems of Belize, it still came as a shock to us to be fully immersed in the country and experience teaching with minimal resources. As we have spent several days this week getting to know our students at Red Bank and San Pablo, planning lessons, walking the students home in the village, and learning about their culture, we have begun to realize how much we live in excess in the United States. This incredible opportunity has taught us not only to make the most out of what we have but also to be grateful for the things we take for granted. From having sharpened pencils, to opening a new set of colored markers, and to feeling the warm breeze flow through the classroom windows, we have truly gained a new perspective on what we considered “the good life”. Our students and fellow Red Bank and San Pablo teachers have shown us how our joy is so much deeper than material things. Being away from our friends, families, and a familiar way of life has opened our eyes to a beautiful culture and how important it is to take risks but also value the loved ones waiting to hear about these amazing experiences!
